Sowmya Barrela, MD, FACP
Dr. Sowmya Barrela is a board-certified internist with extensive experience across academic medicine, traditional internal medicine, and hospital medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Michigan State University, where she later served as an academic hospitalist, teaching medical students at the MSU College of Human Medicine. During this time, she was actively involved in resident education and also maintained her own patient panel at the MSU Internal Medicine Clinic.
In 2019, Dr. Barrela relocated to Atlanta and continued her career as a hospitalist. She has served in several leadership roles, including Associate Medical Director for the Hospital Medicine team at Wellstar North Fulton Hospital and Vice Chair for the Department of Medicine.
In July 2025, Dr. Barrela transitioned to outpatient medicine to establish her primary care clinic in Lawrenceville, with plans to expand to a second location in the Fulton/Forsyth County area. She brings a strong commitment to patient-centered care, comprehensive internal medicine, and building long-term relationships with the communities she serves.
